A short drive to Lake Frederick is all you need in order to discover Regions 117. This farm to table concept is elevated by the fine dining caliber of the food and the restaurant’s mission which is to locally source as many ingredients as possible within 117 miles. If I could coin a term for it I would say it’s on trend with “rustic/comfort fine dining”.
Gone are the days of a fine dining experience only being measured by white linen table clothes, waiters in formal ware, avant-garde plating and Michelin stars. The quality and flavor of the food prepared by Executive Chef Scott Bilstad is on-par with a premier dining experience, but the dishes are comfort food inspired and the restaurant’s atmosphere and feel is one of welcoming rustic warmth. Unlike the fine dining experiences of yester-year, the dishes are simpler in concept and actually get their complexity in the different flavor levels that build upon your palate as you navigate through the dish.
The menu is on the smaller side, but does still manage to have something for everyone; from Virginia raised center cut filet, to wood-fired pizza, to handcrafted signature sandwiches. Regions 117 has quickly grown to become my family’s go-to restaurant for special occasions. During my several dining experiences, I have had the opportunity to try most of the menu and have developed a few fan favorites: Sautéed Brussels Sprouts with Balsamic, Margherita Pizza, and the 12oz. Ribeye Center Cut Filet. I know Brussels sprouts are not an immediate go-to appetizer for many people. But for anyone who is a Brussels sprouts lover (as I am) this appetizer is a must try. The Brussels sprouts were roasted and topped with a decadent creamy blue cheese sauce. The heaviness of the sauce was cut by a lovely drizzle of a balsamic glaze reduction which created a perfectly balanced dish.
If the quality and the sourcing of the food isn’t enough to peak your interest, the restaurant is perched atop tranquil Lake Frederick. The lake makes for a wonderful backdrop for outdoor dining when the weather is conducive. If you are not in the mood to dine outside, no problem – just arrive a little early and you can enjoy a few extra minutes lounging on the terrace taking in the scenic views of the lake.
Regions 117 serves lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30AM to 9:00PM. Additionally, the restaurant is open for brunch on Sunday from 11:00AM to 3:00PM. If going on the weekend I would advise making a reservation in advance (via OpenTable or the restaurant directly) as prime dinner time is a highly coveted time slot.
